One tradition for kicking off the Christmas Season in Cecil County is the annual lighting of the “Holly Tree by-the-tracks". The Baltimore & Ohio held the first public ceremony in 1948 when thousands of people gathered to ring in the season as lights from thousands of bulbs on the evergreen softly illuminated the Jackson, MD hillside. For many years the company dispatched a special train from Mount Royal Station to Jackson for the occasion.
The Cecil County Holly Tree Corporation (A non-profit organization) has continued this tradition, and the lighting of the tree will be on Saturday 6th December 2008 from 4-6 pm. The American Legion Honor Guard, Perryville High School Marching Band and Santa will be in the processional. Local soloists and choral groups will be performing throughout the evening.
Santa Night is Saturday, December 20, 2008 from 5-9 pm. Free pictures with Santa, $1.00 donation for optional frame. Hot chocolate and cider will be served under a heated tent.
Volunteers needed: Decorating Day is Saturday, November 8, 2008 beginning at 10 am. Pastries and hot chocolate will be served in the morning and for those that stay and work past lunch, pizza and soda will be served. Your time and assistance in this project will be greatly appreciated.
